Custom Pendant Lighting Design for a Staircase Void

This project focuses on a vertical lighting installation designed for a multi-level residential staircase void. The space is defined by a continuous, sculptural stair geometry with dark wood cladding and light-colored walls, creating a strong contrast that frames the lighting as the central visual element.

The lighting system is conceived as a cascading composition, occupying the full height of the stairwell and establishing a continuous spatial connection between floors.

Design Approach

Rather than using a single large fixture, the design adopts a clustered pendant strategy, composed of multiple elongated drop elements suspended at varying heights. This approach allows the lighting to adapt to the verticality and irregular geometry of the stair.

The primary design intentions include:

  • Emphasizing vertical movement within the space

  • Creating a sense of continuity across multiple levels

  • Introducing variation while maintaining overall visual order

The result is a dynamic composition that changes depending on viewing angle and elevation.

Form and Composition

Each pendant element features a tapered, droplet-like geometry, combining a cylindrical illuminated core with a rounded glass tip. The arrangement follows a controlled randomness:

  • Varying lengths to create depth

  • Irregular spacing to avoid rigid alignment

  • Grouping density adjusted along the vertical axis

This distribution ensures that the installation reads as a cohesive system rather than individual fixtures.

Material and Detailing

The lighting elements integrate three primary materials:

  • Glass: Clear outer layer with textured or bubble-like inclusions, enhancing light diffusion

  • Metal: Brushed warm-tone fittings that connect the glass elements to suspension cables

  • Light core: Linear LED source embedded within the glass body

The combination of transparent and reflective materials allows the fixture to interact subtly with both artificial and natural light.

Suspension and Installation Logic

The system is supported by a multi-point ceiling canopy, from which individual pendants are suspended via thin cables. Key technical considerations include:

  • Independent height adjustment for each pendant

  • Cable management to maintain visual clarity

  • Load distribution across the mounting plate

Precision in installation is critical, as small deviations in height or alignment can significantly affect the overall composition.

Lighting Performance

The lighting output is designed to balance function and atmosphere:

  • Soft, warm illumination provides ambient lighting for the stair

  • Diffused light minimizes glare in a vertical viewing condition

  • Light intensity remains consistent across different levels

The vertical layering of light sources also enhances depth perception within the space.

Spatial Integration

Within the stairwell, the lighting acts as a vertical anchor. As users move up or down, the perception of the installation continuously shifts—elements overlap, separate, and realign depending on the viewpoint.

The warm light contrasts with the darker stair surfaces, highlighting edges and transitions without overwhelming the architecture. At the same time, reflections within the glass elements introduce subtle visual complexity.

Overall, the system establishes a continuous dialogue between light, movement, and architectural form.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how a multi-pendant lighting system can be used to activate a vertical circulation space. Through controlled variation in form, material, and positioning, the lighting achieves both functional clarity and spatial coherence, reinforcing the architectural identity of the staircase.
